HEY COMIC BOOK PEOPLE

Apr 16, 2010 14:29

(Dear lord it's been a long time since I did an actual post. Been a while since I had time outside of schoolwork to partake in something like this though.)

OKAY so I need suggestions on some major stereotypes about longtime!comic book fans.

(I also need some meaty suggestions on what comic fans could have against manga fans, but more on that later.)

A little explanation: Against my better judgment, I let myself get roped into my school Animation/Illustration club's annual drawing "competition", which more importantly involves the skit with your competitor--usually two thematically conflicting things/people/characters who resolve their conflict with a draw-off. The loser of each draw-off (voted on by the audience) has to sit for the next round of competitors to draw them, and so on.

These guys faced off against Darth Vader, for example...

One of my classmates wanted to do an Anime Geek Versus Comic Book Geek sort of thing. She volunteered since she's big into anime, and heads turned to me when they called for her comic book counterpart. Anyway, the way we have this figured is we're going to be portraying the most negative, obnoxious prevailing fan stereotypes of our respective genres--she's pulling out the fangirl!Japanese, the Narutarded outfit, etc--and we're going to be fighting over anime or comics (specifically the mainstream DC/Marvel houses) being better.

The truth is though, my teen years--when I was especially young and lame enough to actually absorb a lot of the stereotypes that we're mocking--were firmly dedicated to animu, and I only seriously got into comics in college. I don't really have the sort of nostalgia or longtime in-group familiarity with the comic community that I might have if I'd gotten into them sooner.

That's another thing: The conflict is unfamiliar ground for me. I know enough about the arguments made by anime/manga fans over their scorn for American comics, since I was young when I first got into anime and actually believed that shit. I'm really less familiar with what comic fans would have against manga, except for the one I've seen dismissing female comic fans "just being into manga, so who cares" bit. Which.. wouldn't really work for my character, with the whole 'being a girl too' thing. I might try making it almost a jingoistic thing, except that might be weird coming from a Japanese-American >_> (That could be the joke, I guess...) I have a sneaking suspicion that the stereotypical Comic Book Geek character might be better served by a male performer, all things considered, but I think they're stuck with me.

I'm sort of looking to the Simpson's comic story guy as a guide, but he's so understated, and I'd really like to match my Anime Geek in enthusiasm. So far, my only ideas involve:
  • Hand-carting in some of my comic boxes
  • Making my pits look stained
  • .. I dunno, being anal about stuff?
  • Maybe getting some crappy web shooters if they're cheap and goofy looking enough.
(That said, I totally already know how I'm going to approach the draw-off. Time to study some Liefeld~)

So um, help?
