First look: 'Wolf pack' actors grin and bare it for 'New Moon'

star-bolt08: Apparently, the people who worked on the casting for New Moon actually took time to make sure they picked the right actors. They spent months and auditioned thousands of young men for each of the parts. And if that wasn't amazing enough, they're all Native American. It looks like they resolved to look for actors of "Native American or First Nation ancestry," first and would only consider casting young men of other races if they were unsuccessful. There's even a quote from the director, Chris Weitz, where he says that they "had to have papers that proved their heritage."

You know, it's a sad sort of day when the casting production on the Twilight franchise manages to be even slightly less fail than the production on the Avatar franchise (they're even living in flat-out Inuit tents.)

It's also a sad sort of day when I realize that I actually almost want to see New Moon. Even though I loathe the franchise and the characters and I'm pretty sure this particular story with its BOYFRIEND LEAVES, HEROINE GOES COMPLETELY CATATONIC, AND HER FATHER APPROVES OF HER FRIEND FORCING HIMSELF ON HER plotline is one of the more hideous commercially released things I've heard of in recent years. But...

I mean. Dude.

(LOL guy second from left is such a pouter :3) Also I may have mentally just cast the far right guy as Hahn from the Northern Water Tribe...

They do seem to still have Paramount!Avatar syndrome with the white!person-of-color main character), but I still say better Taylor 'sorta-Native' Lautner than Jackson 'they'll-suspend-their-disbelief-if-I-get-a-tan' Rathbone, y'know?

Seems to me the people casting New Moon didn't particularly have to wrestle with themselves over the question, "Y'know, do we want a movie with real Native Americans who are bad actors, or Caucasian fake-Native Americans who are good actors?" Or even wonder "but where will we even find enough Native Americans to audition??" Just put out the casting call, specified what they wanted, and prepared to make compromises if that didn't work out as planned. Funny, that.
