BRB FLAILING TOO HARD

Apr 07, 2009 12:50

After California's voters agreed to write an anti-same sex marriage amendment into our state Constitution in November, and now judges seem unlikely to turn over the amendment on legal grounds, I was terrified that California would be the trendsetter (certainly in other areas, CA policy gets adopted by the rest of the country in a matter of years) for other states to follow suit.

I've never been happier to be wrong.

Same-Sex Marriage Approved in Vermont as Legislature Overrides Veto
The Vermont Senate and House voted today to override a veto by Governor Jim Douglas of the state's same-sex marriage bill.

The Senate voted 23-5, overriding the veto by a wide margin, while the House squeaked through with a 2/3 majority with a 100-49 vote. [Sauce]

Massachusetts and Connecticut are in the bag. Earlier this month Iowa moved to recognize gay marriage as well. Now Vermont is the fourth state in the US to recognize gay marriage! And this week's bandwagon of win ain't over!

D.C. Council Votes to Recognize Other States' Gay Marriages
The D.C. Council voted today to recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states, on the same day that Vermont became the fourth state to legalize same-sex unions.

Domestic partnerships are already legal in the nation's capital. But today's vote, billed as an important milestone in gay rights, explicitly recognizes relocated gay married couples as married. [Sauce]

RAAAAAAAAAAAAWK!

Yay for the capitol! I'm going to take this as a really good sign of things to come. Optimistic, maybe, but at least they're giving me reason to be.

Also, open notice to the west coast (though California in particular--I'd like to feel smugly superior about my state again kthnx): GET your act together ಠ_ಠ I don't want New England to be that much cooler than us.. (Pic is actually from the Iowa victory, but I liked it.)
