I got to see The Golden Compass tonight, and I don't much feel up to a review, though I will say this:
WAY TOO MUCH MOVIE IN WAY TOO LITTLE TIME.
We're scarcely a minute into the movie when it's all, "Okay here's this girl and souls are in animals and there's this compass she can read to find out junk and kids are disappearing and she's gotta go north and ditch Nicole Kidman and BEAR WAR and lobotomizing center and witches OKAY THEY HAVE TO FIGHT NOW and they've got to do more stuff later um THE END."
Followed by the worst theme song in the history of ever D: Speaking of which, Alexandre Desplat really dropped the ball on the epic!movie soundtrack. I suppose this'll just be for him what POTC:DMC was for Hans Zimmer. Snore~
The director, the editor, someone needs to look into the concept of pacing. Golden Compass was faster and more nonsensical than POTC:AWE, and even AWE had two full movies of development (arguably, but they were there!) before it went completely bugfuck nuts on the eight-whatever story lines. Epic movies need an epic movie time frame to situate themselves in, and this was one--if it's got Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee in it, it's an epic movie. But the audience never had a chance to begin to connect with the characters or what the HELL was happening.
Though I liked Lyra, Pan, the witches, and wino!bear. And it was a very pretty movie with pretty nifty costuming and set design.
But in conclusion, um, pass on it.
