"Okane ga Nai" is out -- IT'S RAPE O'CLOCK!!
So as it turns out, the first Okane ga Nai OVA was released already (without my knowing! Tsk.) Which means, whoo hoo, more yaoi on the video market! I think now we can officially start counting the number of yaoi anime titles on the market on MORE THAN TWO HANDS! *le gasp* And it's porny, which is yet another rarity. Well, in that non-explicit explicit way these things have a way of being.
For those not in the know, the basic synopsis is that there's some pretty shouta-looking (but eighteen years old, really!) boy sold in a sex ring named Ayase, who's bought up by the imposing and socially awkward, gigantamo shouldered Yakuza man (or was he just a business man? I'm getting my archetypes mixed up O_o) Kano, who has a past connection with Ayase, though the latter doesn't remember. It's really not important. Within the first chapter of the manga, Ayase is made aware of his circumstances and, although Kano's feelings for Ayase are genuine, he also turns out to be a bit of a rapey prick. Kano arranges a deal with Ayase, telling him he'll be released of his debt to Kano when he is able to repay the amount that was shelled out for him--and that Kano will pay Ayase in installments each time he has sex with him. Very seedy, and Ayase turns out to be a total Mary Sue that every man in the series tries to sex up. It was also one of the first explicit yaoi manga I'd been introduced to, so there's some weird fondness there. *cringe*
A couple of thoughts: One of the series' strongest points was its artwork. Although it featured a rather exaggerated set of designs for the seme/uke types, even for the yaoi genre (bigger-than-Blondie proportions versus enormous, face-eating eyes and frail pixie figure) the artwork itself was lovely, with delicate clean strokes and strong aesthetic consideration in every panel. I don't think the transition to animation went real smoothly -_- A hardening of features in the chara designs are only to be expected, but it lacks beauty. Which I realize is subjective, but really, was not impressed by the anime character designer. Somehow, lacking the same beauty of design, watching the story unfold feels even sleazier than reading it. I'm also put off that Ayase is blond. *misses his chestnut hair* And also by his limp eyes, even if I'm thoroughly enchanted by their color...
Though Okane doesn't quite suffer the tendency toward off model animation that the Haru wo Daite Ita OVA often did, there is a good deal of sloppy and awkward animation and screen direction. On top of this, a number of very different artistic takes on rendering yaoi anime sex scenes were tried out, which made the watching extremely jarring. The psychadelic silhouettes, the multiple split screens (that moved, no less), the terrible blocking off entire portions of the screen for.. I guess censoring purposes.. made for a bizarre experience. Not so bizarre as the ACID DROPPING BADNESS of After School in the Teacher's Lounge, granted. Though, okay, bits of it were still kinda hot. Mostly on Kano's, come-covered-hand-licking side..
Though honestly, looking at all the hyper-visceral explicit hentai titles out there (they'll show the inside of a woman's vagina from every possible angle, for heaven's sake) how much would it be to ask for a simple finger-in-ass shot? If ONLY because the -weird- censoring that yaoi animations adopt to get around explicitness make scenes damn near unwatchable. We moved on from the Glowing Cones of Blue Wolves, the sheer -nothingness- (with blurring despite that) of Level C, the strangely artistic air-fondling of Fujimi Orchestra, and I thought we were on to something with Sensitive Pornograph, industry, don't let me down now -_-
The music is pretty bland, though nothing you wouldn't hear in your run of the mill BL drama. Speaking of which, my memory of the Okane ga Nai drama is quite bad--does anyone know if the same seiyuu were used?
But naw, I'ma be honest here--I'm glad it's even available. I'm just happy to have this stuff on the market, and all the better if it's based off a source material I enjoy (or enjoyed at one point before honing my taste in manporn XP). I'm definitely excited about the impending release of Yamane-sensei's Ikoku Irukoi Romantan OVA, too!
