Feb. 4: Your favorite vacation spot, and why

That's easy, because really at the moment we only have one vacation spot, period. Years ago, before Ben and I really knew we were a couple (although I'm sure everyone else had it figured out), we took a quick trip to the coast. I'd only seen the ocean a handful of times in my life up to that point, and we were desperate to get away from the gray blandness of Reno in March, even if just overnight. He was still healing from the rupture of his marriage, and I was buried in grad school and really questioning my choices in life up to that point.

We drove straight up to Sebastopol, CA on a Saturday afternoon, had dinner, found a hotel and set out to find the ocean. This is rather a difficult and dangerous thing to do on a rainy night when the fog's coming in. I didn't know about the cliffs. At one point, we parked on a bluff and sat in the darkness, breathing in eucalyptus and fog and listening to the waves far below.

In the morning after breakfast we went back to the coast. We were a little appalled at how close we had come to just hurtling off a cliff in the darkness the night before. We spent the day wandering the shoreline, playing in the water, taking hundreds of pictures, beachcombing.

Like I said, we'd been together for a while up to that point, but it was during that trip that I really felt we were a couple, not just friends, not dating, but really together. We've been back a few times since then: once or twice just the two of us, once to take my mother to see a friend, and once with the girls so that they could see the ocean. They weren't impressed...they were cold. Silly kids! Rhiannon finally got it before we left, and she and I nearly drowned chasing the waves along the shore. Someday, I'd like to spend more than a weekend up there.
