Character depth can be tough in the first draft, it seems. I saw an exercise recently (I think in one of James Scott Bell's books) that kind of blew my mind: what is the one thing your character would absolutely NEVER do or say? Now, put them in a situation where they would at least think it, if not do or say it... :-O
I know the conundrum though. In my WIP, I like my protag and she has some interesting quirks, but as it is, the story just kind of happens around her, and she reacts, but she doesn't push enough. She explores, sure, but really, the antagonist is far more interesting. I've done some exercises writing from the antagonist's POV, and in comparison, it is so delicious and meaty. It has such energy. I can't include that text because it doesn't work in the framework on my narrative, but I still need to figure out how to convey it, while making my protag beefier at the same time.
(Meat. Beef. I think it's time for breakfast.)
