It's in unguarded moments that Mary Jane Watson (parker mary jane parker) remembers, if remembering is the right way to describe it. It's more like flashes, snapshots in her mind of another life that she used to live, has never lived, has only ever dreamed. The moments before she falls asleep, or when she's so in-character that she isn't quite herself anyway, or when she's been exercising so hard for so long that it's just her and the pounding of her heart, no thoughts to get in the way.

A flash of something, and suddenly she's thinking of Spider-Man, except that what she's thinking is, "Guy needs to get over the creepy obsession with tights and leave New York to Jackpot."

("Jackpot's got great hair," her mind occasionally adds with a note of suspicion. "You'd think superheroes could come up with their own styles.")

An e-mail from Harry, and "but you're dead," only he's not because he's inviting her to yet another party. She won't go, of course. She won't go because Peter will be there.

Peter.

(And then she's thinking of Spider-Man again.)

She left New York because of Peter. God, she can hardly remember why, now. She just remembers that it was like a divorce, even though they were only living together; a divorce that left her angry and bitter and needing the West Coast where life was better. It was easier to breathe, out west, with no Peter Parker or Spider-Man or hair-stealing superheroes. Even now, years (weeks) later, an old picture is more than enough to make her feel that bitterness all over again, that hatred, that ... sadness.

It hurts, to look at pictures. It hurts and she doesn't even know why.

So she doesn't.

Mary Jane Watson doesn't have photo albums or high school yearbooks. Mary Jane Watson lives in the here and the now, tiger, the high-profile movie auditions and the all-night parties and the affairs with much more famous celebrities. Mary Jane Watson has a life that doesn't involve New York or anyone who lives there.

Mary Jane Parker, though; she remembers. And she hurts. And she waits for it all to come out right again.
