My phone contract is up at the end of next month, and I'm thinking of changing over from O2 to T-mobile
.
I can cancel the contract with O2 any time on or before the 29th of this month; but the discounts that they can apply to the next contract are only confirmed on, of course, the 29th of this month. Which gives me a window of one day to get a definite offer from O2 and go for it. Provisionally, they reckon I'll be able to get 400 minutes and 500 texts, plus 20MB data for £30 a month an new handset from a relatively limited range, on a twelve month contract.
T-Mobile will do £90 of flexible credit, unlimited data and a new handset for £37-50 a month on an 18 month contract. It's the flexibility that I'm really after, because one long phone can fuck you up for the month on a fixed tariff;but 400 minutes is more than I need, I think. For reference, the T-Mobile deal would give me 300 minutes and 300 texts - but you can use more or less of each as you want.
Here's the run-down:
O2 - pros
- I get a good deal because I'm a (very) long-time customer;
- it's more minutes and texts than I think I'll need;
- I've never had a problem with signal or service issues;
- it's a 12 month contract.
O2 - cons
- it took them 6 months of phone calls to their customer service line to get them to stop fucking up my bills last time (and 5 months the year before);
- it's a fixed tariff - I can't use fewer texts to compensate if I've made lots of long calls;
- limited choice of handset
- one day window of opportunity to sort it out.
T-Mobile - pros
- flexible tariff that should meet my needs;
- unlimited web/mail access;
- better choice of handsets.
T-Mobile - cons
- it's fewer texts/minutes than O2;
- it's an eighteen month contract;
- it slightly more expensive (although this isn't really an issue).
NB - I use the data access for general web and mail. I don't download, stream or otherwise faff about.
So, what do you guys think?
