I've come to believe that rank is for nothing but show.
I was promoted from Cadet Ensign to Cadet Lieutenant (Junior Grade) today. That's O-1 to O-2. That's also money if you're in the real Navy.
Richard was promoted from C/LCDR to C/CDR, the highest rank an NJROTC cadet can achieve.
Brad was promoted from C/LT to C/LCDR.
Brittany was promoted from C/LT to C/LCDR.
Annalee was promoted from C/LTJG to C/LT.
Daniel, Katie, and Kasey were all promoted from C/ENS to C/LTJG.
If you don't know Richard, he's an all around great guy. He's one of my best friends and also the person I most respect. He's always got the logical answer, the one that can stop an argument without taking sides. He's creative and funny. He's also the Commanding Officer of our Unit. However, he does not need his rank, as most great leaders don't. He doesn't need it to have people respect him, they respect him for who he is. I hope to someday accomplish the same thing.
Brad is also one of my best friends and more respectable than others, though sometimes I'm not sure if they respect him for who he is. Brad's a pretty good guy, depending on who you ask. In my own personal opinion, I think he does more good than harm. He's the best damn Drill team CDR I've ever had, that's a fact, not an opinion. He's very knowledgeable about the military and he always has some great quote or event in history to relate everything to in the present. Brad also likes to talk -- a lot. Now here, I can't blame him because I do the same, but damn can that boy talk. He'll tell you about what he's going to explain, explain it, then re-explain it in case you didn't get it the first two times. He likes to make speeches and put on shows. He's pretty funny, too.
There's not a lot I can say about the rest of them, I don't know them well enough. I'm always around Rich and Brad though, trying to learn and whatnot. I watch them very closely. For three years now I've watched the class ahead of me do some great things. These two were always at the head of the pack. They are all graduating this year, that means that the class of 2004 has to pick up where they left off. I'm still not quite sure how to do that, but I'm working on it.
So why is rank only for show? I think that it was said best in the movie TAPS. "They'll respect the rank, alright. You've got to earn their respect for you." I got a positive feedback on the reports from my drill team. I'd like to think that I could be a Seaman Recruit and they'd follow me just they same. It's hard to judge one's self though. Also, all our promotions were proportional, so it's as if no one even got promoted. It's like adding an equal number to both sides of an equation, the outcome is the same.
In other news... I love my cat... now that she's fixed.
