For those who missed it, here's how State of the Union 2006 began:
- Obligatory token gesture to commemorate passing of Coretta Scott King
- Obligatory insincere appeal to “civil discourse” in the “conversation”
- Obligatory meaningless historical plattitude: “the state of our union is strong”
With those out of the way, what follows is my flawed and probably incomplete log of the Standing Ovations of the State of the Union (SOOTSOTU), by the minute and, when available, with whatever pithy quote/plattitude he offered up first.
- Standing Ovation Count (SOC): 1 (6:17 PM) “We love our freedom, and we will fight to keep it.”
Stutter-count: 1 “vish-vicious”
- SOC: 2 (6:20 PM) “We will never surrender to evil.”
- [Obligatory attempt to freak out his own constituents: "America rejects the policy of isolationalism.”]
- SOC: 3 (6:23 PM) I am confident in the blah blah blah…and we are winning.
- SOC: 4 (6:24) “Those decisions will be made by military commanders and not by polititians in Washington DC.”
- SOC: 5 (6:25) “We must keep our word, defeat our enemies, and stand behind the American military in its vital mission.”
- SOC: 6 (6:26) [sorry, I was up getting wine.]
- SOC: 7 (6:28) “Never forget the sacrifices of American families.”
- SOC: 8 (6:29) missed this one too. oh well.
- SOC: 9 (6:31) “The nations of the world must not allow the Iranians to get nukular weapons.”
- SOC: 10 (6:34) “These men and women have dedicated our lives and we must support them.”
- SOC: 11 (6:34) “[we must continue to support the] Patriot Act.”
- SOC: 12 (6:36) (talking about wiretapping American citizens w/o warrants) “We will not sit back and wait to be hit again.”
- SOC: 13 (6:37) “…for freedom.” (I know, I’m slacking lately. Drifting in and out.)
Stutter count: 2 “feet-feed people’s fears.”
- SOC: 14 (6:38) “And our society couldn’t function without [immigrants].”
- SOC: 15 (6:40) “…make the tax cuts permanent.”
- SOC: 16 (6:40) “…[cutting ‘ineffective’ social programs, ostensibly in order to save] the American tax-payers 14 billion dollars.”
- SOC: 17 (6:41)…line item veto.”
- SOC: 18 (6:43) (Democrats only): Congress did not act on my plan to [fuck up] Social Security.
- SOC: 19 (6:43) (Republicans only) “the rising cost of entitlements is a problem that is not going away.”
- SOC: 20 (6:44) (both) “…we need to put aside the partisan politics and work together and get this problem solved.”
- SOC: 21 (6:46) “…keeping america competitive requires affordable health care.”
Irony of the evening: “America is addicted to oil.” Thanks for that stunning revelation, numbnuts.
- SOC: 22 (6:48) [refilling wine glass]
Stutter-count: 3 "…better back-batteries for cars…"
- SOC: 23 (6:49) [Make our cars] competitive.
- SOC: 24 (6:50) “…make our dependence on middle eastern oil a thing of the past...
Empty “we can do better with American education” plattitudes count: 1. American competitiveness initiative? WTF? Meanwhile, SOC: 25 (6:52)
- SOC: 26 (6:54) “Everyone in America has a right to be proud (of our budding personal responsibility).”
- SOC: 27 (6:55) …?...
- SOC: 28 (6:56) Judges must be servants of the law…and not legislate from the bench.
- SOC: 29 (6:56) “The United States is grateful to Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.” (presumably, for retiring and presenting the opportunity to screw us with yet another nominee)
- SOC: 30 (6:57) “…or put up for sale.” (I dunno, he was speaking against cloning.)
- SOC: 31 (6:57) …
- SOC: 32 (6:58) “…and this good work (the American Youth Initiative) is being led by our first lady, Laura Bush.”
- SOC: 33 (7:00) “let us work for the day…justice and hope…[borrowing from MLK]
- SOC: 34 (7:01) [re-authorize the Ryan White Act]. Actually gets bi-partisan SO.
- SOC: 35 (7:02) “…Let us move forward…confident of the victories to come. May God Bless America.”
Yes, may God truly bless America (although I suspect this means differently to me than it would to this president...)
