Montreal

I'm considering a course abroad next summer which will include 10 days in Montreal. (I'm asking about this so soon b/c I have a chronic illness and need to do my research before knowing if this is a real possibility.)

How easy is it to eat vegan in Montreal? I've googled and found a ton of veg*n restaurants, but because I assume many of our days ( Read more... )

aux vivres is kind of a given, but to be honest it's not THAT great. it's probably our only 100% vegan restaurant,

The other two vegan restaurants on the island are Crudessence (raw vegan) and (as far as I know) Green Panther, which I have not yet been to, but strikes me from what I have heard as more of a cafe/juice bar with some sandwich options.

Generally speaking, I have had very little problem getting restaurants to veganize things for me, though I generally try to stay away from French/Italian restaurants in favour of more non-European ethnic restaurants.

The reviews of the Green Panther describe the inside as quite small, so take-out or delivery might usually be a better option.

I have enjoyed crudessence the last two times I went, but I think that it depends on what you get and what you expect. Raw "pizza" is not pizza in any classic sense of the word ;).

I didn't mean for my whole post to sound cantankerous though. I do in fact agree with you wrt eating at omnivorous restaurants. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions! I can pretty much live off of falafel for a week if necessary so that's good to know. :)

yeah you're right about aux vivres, I think I'm just such a sucker for their BLT sandwich and their desserts, it's kind of the only place that has a pretty good selection of desserts including cheesecake that are all vegan (yes they are super easy to make at home by myself, but sometimes i don't feel like it, it's nice to have the option). I also think I enjoy feeling that indecisiveness when I look at their menu because there are more than 2 options for me to choose from unlike the omni places- so my excitement for the place probably comes from there. I am also going to be reading your blog and taking tips, I really haven't lived in mtl that long so i don't know most omni restaurants and i have lots of omni friends.
