Sugar

I just saw this post about vegan pizza and then saw something about sugar possibly not being vegan?

I am a vegetarian slowly making the switch to vegan (weeding things out slowly--have eliminated all dairy [with the exception of cheese on pizza] and don't eat eggs by themselves--as in no scrambled eggs, over easy eggs, etc--next step is if they are in something). But I didn't know sugar wasn't vegan? I guess I never really thought about where sugar came from! But...I didn't consider it an animal product either.

I'm just asking for clarification and a bit of an explanation I guess. How is sugar not vegan?
ETA: One other thing I haven't eliminated yet (that is a dairy product): Chocolate! I've found some vegan chocolate lately and love it but as I have a major sweet tooth and vegan chocolate isn't easily available to me, I do eat some nonvegan chocolate~ Also, I sometimes forget that chocolate isn't vegan...I don't know why that is though *shrugs*
