Rescue Of the Dancing Bears

Jan 12, 2010 10:53

Kartick Satyanarayan rescues enslaved bears and provides new jobs for their former exploiters.

This was filmed in Nov 2009. So the last bear should be free now :]

"There were 1200 dancing bears... We've rescued over 550...and we're rescuing the last dancing bear in India".

What happened to the other ~650 bears?
:(

maybe they were rescued by other orgs? i've met people who work to save these bears.

Oh that's a much better explanation than what I was thinking. :)

Were you thinking they started their own bear space program? If so, I think that's much better than them being rescued =)

That is an awesome project though.
Giving people measures to have an income that doesn't depend on exploiting the bears is great. As good as it is to just rescue animals, it's even better to take away the need for people to exploit animals.

right exactly :]
these people had been doing it for ~centuries~, so it's really all they knew.
now, not only are the bears safe, but the people can expand economically. :]

makes ya think about what other animal exploitation situations are similar enough for it to work...

I think it is. If you take something away from people, it is only reasonable to offer them something in return.

Compensation is one thing, but a new career is like the old adage, "Give someone a loaf of bread and feed them for a day, give them land and feed them for life." (Updated for veganism.)

yeah.. and the last one would have been freed in December of last year. I wonder how long it took them from start to finish.
