Iowa?

So I'm thinking of movie to Iowa to do an AmeriCorps program. I will end up in either Cedar Rapids or Cedar Falls. I've looked on Happy Cow, and I know the vegan-friendly restaurant options will be limited. I'm wondering if anybody has been to/lives in one of these towns and can tell me if I'll be able to find veg items at a grocery store ( ( Read more... )

When I visited my parents this summer, I got to experience small town Louisiana as a vegan. I was not looking forward to it. But even this town of 30,000 people in Louisiana, land of seafood and butter, had a health food store, and I went in with low expectations, but came out with SO MUCH. I was floored.

I stocked up on vegan toiletries to leave at my dad's house, so I don't have to pack shampoo every time I go home. I purchased a variety of subs just to let my family taste them. And I asked the workers to never close up shop, lol. She said, "We've been here 28 years. We aren't going anywhere." Considering I grew up in that town and had no idea of their existence, I guess it just shows that the teacher appears when the student is ready. Or whatever. :)

The poster above me had a good recommendation about looking online for the last few items that might be hard to find. I'm currently living without nutritional yeast because I just moved to a new country and haven't found it yet, and it's a little annoying but doable. I do have an address to a health food store that I want to go check out. I'm not sure how you say nutritional yeast in Dutch, but I hope the container makes it obvious! :)
