B12 IS in mushrooms afterall.

Am I the last vegan on the planet to hear about this? It seems that earlier this year, researchers at the University of Western Sydney finally proved that B12 is bio-available in mushrooms, "in exactly the same form as in beef liver and fish".

Details under cut. )

Personally, I didn't need any more reasons, but it's still nice to know :D

I've heard many times before that the reason mushrooms have B12 is due to the animal waste products in the soil. Do you know if any of these readings explicitly refute this? Do they say they grew the mushrooms without the aid of animal based fertiliser?

I did a very quick search on the first page for the words 'manure' and 'fertilis(z)er' but it was unsuccessful.

They use the word "compost", for which chicken manure was a variable in some of the tests. Also found this ( ... )

Excellent!

Thanks for summarising everything for me (and others). I just don't have the time to put even minimal effort into reading and comprehension today =)

Am I mistaken in remembering that B12 can come from simple residual soil? Mushrooms tend to hold on to a lot of grit, and perhaps this is where this is coming from?

Of course I am in no way an expert on the issue, I just remember reading that somewhere. . .
