A friend of mine is thinking of trying veg*anism and is wondering if there were any nutritional studies done comparing omnivores with vegetarians and/or vegans. I know of lots of studies looking a certain types of meat consumption increasing risk of cancer/heart disease etc and also at studies looking solely at veg*an health, but was wondering if ( Read more... )

Cancer, heart disease, high cholesterol.. etc.

That and you can get everything positive you would get out of dairy such as calcium and vitamin D from non animal sources.

That's great abstract, thank you. He hasn't said anything specific, just wanted comaparison studies which are alot more difficult to find compared to the "red meat increases your risk of cancer" stuff. Also stuff that is peer reviewed is great, where did you look for this, is there a particular academic website?

These google search terms come up with dozens:

site:www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/ vegan omnivore

Of course, google annoys me by equating vegan with vegetarian, but inserting a "-vegetarian" will get rid of that if you want to refine it so.

And all are comparative and academic.

I just did a quick search on Google Scholar and most of the articles that came up said veg*ns were less at risk for heart disease, but that they often had deficiencies.

The EU is doing some comprehensive longitudinal studies that look promising. The Oxford cohort in particular is comparatively studying large sample groups of omnivores, pescatarians, lacto-ovos, and vegans. They've published a few findings on nutrient intake, BMI, and blood pressures, if you look around a bit you'll find them.

The China Project was essentially a comparative study between omnis, vegetarians, and vegans.

Meat Intake and Mortality (Arch Intern Med., Sinha et al)

Veganism, bone mineral density, and body composition: a study in Buddhist nuns (Osteoporosis International, Ho-Pham et al) [another study on nuns but this time in Vietnam]
