Humans don't keep producing breast milk.... It'd be nice if that happened so women could donate milk, there are a lot of babies that can't get their mom's breast milk for whatever reason. Oh well.

Yes we do keep producing milk indefinitely. As long as there is a baby or a child nursing regularly you will make milk. That's how wet nurses used to do it. Also, a lot of women do donate milk to banks and to milkshare but you produce a lot more when a baby drinks it directly than when you pump.

Oh and also most women (sadly) would rather feed their children formula made from cow milk than feed another human mom's milk. I think that is ridiculous.

Even though studies show you're able to give your baby vital antibodies and boast their immune system by breast feeding them? Wow.

most women don't bother to try. in some parts of the country successful breastfeeding rates are in the teens. women don't know how, they are given terrible advice by doctors, friends and family, they are given free formula at the hospital AND it is mailed to new moms by formula companies. Moms are also made to feel uncomfy if they nurse in public or in mixed company. Also people are misinformed to belief formula is "just as good" as breastmilk. Blah. It all makes me so angry.

tax payers have to pay for cows milk formula for poor moms and formula fed babies overall have more illness and hospital visits so we pay for that too. it makes no sense. And no one seems to care that formula companies have caused the deaths of countless children in underdeveloped countries... why give money to a business that kills babies for profit?

so animals and people are exploited by these companies.

Indefinitely? There must be some kind of limit, isn't there? I mean, if I keep feeding my baby till the age of 50, I keep giving milk? Totally willing to believe you here, it just sounds... incredible.

Back to the OP:
But the key of course is: as long as there is a child nursing. If you stop breast feeding, after a while it stops, right? (assuming this is answered with a yes:) if you don't let the calf drink, and we don't take any of the milk, the cow will eventually stop lactating. your family seems to want to reenforce the idea we're doing the cows a favour, but we're only 'helping' with a situation WE created.

well i don't know if a woman in her 70's (assuming she gave birth in her 20s) can produce milk. i think it would have to do more with the age of the mom rather than the length of time lactating. I know a family wo all extended nursed their children and each others' children when babysitting and they kept that up about ten years with pumping when they had no nurslings. It is also possible to lactate without giving birth. Some adoptive moms work on it so they can feed their adopted babies.

As for cows the amount of milk we expect from them is so outrageous that we have to pump them full of hormones then antibiotics to keep them alive. Impregnating them again may possibly increase supply. not sure.
