I had a really hard time finding suitable food in the rural parts of Southeast Asia, specifically Cambodia and Laos. It was more manageable in cities, though.

I don't have any vegan stories, but my mom is a vegetarian and had no problem staying veg in Uganda. Where in Africa was your friend?

i dont know, he've been in many places because he was travelling to help people with hospitals, water, etc, to do humanitarian aid ( sorry if it's the wrong english term ) anyway he had to go on really small villages. And since i'd love to do that one day i'd love to know if it's possible. Is your mother on a city or a village?

This is a little different, but when I was in Spain on vacation (Madrid, Segovia, and Toledo), I was vegetarian and it was incredibly hard to find food that was vegetarian! Some didn't even understand what that was. They'd ask me if fish was okay, or pig. They didn't understand it. I couldn't imagine being vegan there. I was traveling with a friend and we stayed in a hostel, so much of our eating was out. For breakfast the hostel provided us with coffee/tea and toast with nutella (not vegan). I ate a lot of vegetals (vegetable sandwiches, if I remember the word correctly) - those had cooked white asparagus and some other veggies and mayo (they love to put mayo on everything!), vegetable paella (when I could find it, a lot of times the option wasn't there), tortillas (which are these egg dishes), and a lot of times I would eat plates of green beans or any kind of vegetable they had.

Thank you for telling that
I think i could deal with that kind of things if i at least dont have to eat meat... i sure don't want to but i would prefer eat vegetarian food that are not vegan than meat..

i was just veg when i was traveling in madrid and southern spain. all i ate were aceitunas y pan (olives and bread). i also packed a 30 pack of luna bars. i got so hungry only finding veg paella once, and eating the occaisonal tortilla de espanola, and weird lettuce salads with white asparagus.

Has anyone been to major cities in China (Xi'an,Beijing)? I am going on a student tour in June, and all the guide books say "Being a vegetarian is hard going in China, all vegetables are cook in meat oils." So far, I am planning on packing a lot of tofurkey jurky and protein bars? Pretty sure I am afraid to eat anything there now.

Friends travelling in Africa said often in small out the way places there was one pot and everything went in it and you ate it or you went without. That was my experience in some out of the way parts of the Amazon basin also.
