Philadelphia Animal Defense League (ADL) returned to the streets again today to continue to name, shame and expose those who seek to profit off of exploiting living creatures as commodities.
Today, we had 2 short but very strong demonstrations against collaborators of Huntingdon Life Sciences (HLS) - a notorious contract animal testing facility with labs in England and America. HLS kills 500 animals a day (by their own admission!) for such things as bleach, artificial sweetener and shampoo, just to name a few. Do we really need to be spending money on things like this in 2009? As one pedestrian who talked to us on the street today put it, “My mother told me back in the 50s not to put bleach or shampoo in my eyes or swallow them; it hurts. We knew that 50 years ago, we don’t need tests to tell us that today, and we most definitely don’t need to kill 500 animals a day to find out, either!”
That’s how we feel, too, so we hit a company that delivers office supplies to HLS and one of their largest shareholders.
Demo #1
Staples - 1500 Chestnut St, Philadelphia PA
We hadn’t been to Staples in a while, and we wanted to make sure that they knew we hadn’t forgotten about them or the fact that they deliver office supplies to HLS in unmarked vans in the middle of the night. When was the last time anyone heard of Staples using unmarked vans to deliver office supplies, or delivering in the middle of the night? They’re normally so proud. They must know there is something wrong with delivering to HLS, but they do it anyway. As long as the money comes in, who cares how black your heart turns - right? Shame on you, Staples! Cut your ties with HLS. We haven’t forgotten about you, and we’ll never forgive you.
While we were there, an employee came outside and took pictures of us on his phone and told us “Fuck you!” This is just the norm for this company, and it’s really quite sad. Last time, their store manager physically assaulted us. The store manager at the other location in the area has also assaulted us while yelling homophobic insults. Scraping the bottom of the barrel, aren’t we, Staples? Drop HLS, and take some anger management classes while you’re at it.
Demo #2
National City Corp - 1345 Chestnut St, Philadelphia PA
National City owns 74,500 shares of stock in HLS (listed on the New York Stock Exchange Arca listing as LSR), which means they must think that HLS is a great way to make money. That’s why you buy stock in a company. Trying to make money off of someone who kills 500 animals a day shows that your company is morally bankrupt, and that’s what we think of you, National City. Not only is HLS a bad moral investment, they’re also over $100 billion in debt, and investing in them just makes no sense from a financial point-of-view. Drop all of your shares in HLS. The entrance to your building is full of marble arches, so we KNOW it must be loud as hell in there when we’re outside. Want us to go away? Drop HLS, and promise never to do business with them again.
At these 2 demos, just 30 minutes each, we gave out hundreds of fliers on HLS, what they do, and who does business with them. Philadelphia was educated, and puppy killers were exposed.
We told you we’d be back, and we made sure you know we meant it. We’re in for the long haul, until you drop HLS. We have only one goal: closing HLS forever. Do you want to go down with their sinking ship? If not, bail out now.
