Followup to Wellness pet food post

Mar 21, 2009 21:53

recently I made this post about whether or not Wellness foods (Old Mother Hubbard) conducts animal testing (they don't use invasive testing but they do have kennels, which caused some concern in the comments). Apparently the comments and discussion caught the attention of Old Mother Hubbard and I received an unsolicited email from a manager of consumer affairs with a little more details about the kennels in question.

I'm sending this email because I saw a posting on the forum veganpeople recently and thought perhaps it was a post from you. Another member of that board expressed some concern about standard kennel conditions and invasive procedures so I wanted to take the time to address any concerns that may still be lingering. The member also posted a link to a NY Times article about a Quaker Oats kennel near Chicago that she said sounded ok.

I was happy to see that because the conditions at that Quaker Oats kennel are very similar to the kennel that we use for our products. The cats at this kennel are housed in a community setting where they are free to socialize and play with each other and the staff and the dogs all have access to several expansive outdoor play areas where they can romp with each other and the employees of the kennel.

We only conduct two types of feeding studies on our new products. One is for palatability and the other for digestibility, both of which are non-invasive.

Please know that most of us here are also pet parents - my own family belongs to two cats, one dog and a horse - so we share your concerns. We were very selective in choosing this facility and have made site visits to ensure that the conditions there meet our stringent requirements. Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns and I will be happy to address them.
