Aww man, now I wish I was with my father (he lives in Hall where I was raised) because my father and I would probably help you in the capture situation. We both like taking odd jobs together.

I'll try asking him today, though.

Thank you! I have a coworker, whose roommate may be able to help me, but I'm just trying to reach as many people as possible so I can try to find some help. I'm also concerned about the cats having FIV, since I already have two cats. Hopefully once I can get help, I'll be able to figure out logistics from there.

If you can get them immediately to the vet for testing perhaps they can board them? Or do you have anyone who has a non-cat household who could quarantine them for you until they get the all clear?

I don't know much about live trapping.
If you send me your email I could see if my coordinator (I work with a rescue) knows any tricks. I know we've had to live trap escapees before. ;)

You could also contact Alley Cat Allies and see if they can give you some help.

I've heard that sometimes the animals don't weight enough to spring the trap so it is suggested to put a light weight on the pad. I think I've heard this more in relation to live trapping released domestic rats, though, but I could be getting my stories all mixed up!

It's not a bad idea. OP's going to want that trap on a hair-trigger. Then again, I remember the time where I went to pick up the traps that I'd set the night before and had FOUR kittens in one trap, so sometimes having it not spring shut right away is good.

My friend and I TNR'd 86 cats that summer, and tamed, neutered and found homes for 11 more (including that litter. They were tiny little guys, about 4 weeks old). Sadly, the program that was paying for the spay/neuter surgeries ended, but we did what we could.

I had nothing better to do that summer. I'd just gotten laid off in the 4th round of lay-offs from the largest ISP in the small town I was working in, there were no local jobs left in my field, so I did volunteer cat rescue that summer while I collected unemployment and waited for the losers that had gotten canned in the first round of layoffs to get fired so there would be openings.

I had to quit doing it, though. One of my babies who I'd nursed back from a walking skeleton after she'd been hit by a car and left to die got adopted by a psychopath. We found out what he was doing and got her back before he killed her, but a least 48 other cats, including another foster from my group, weren't so lucky. He had all the right answers, he had us completely hoodwinked. Paid $200 in adoption fees without blinking. I don't think I can ever adopt out a cat to a stranger again, and I also don't ever want to be a hoarder. I'm happy to dispense what I've learned, and I donate what I can, but I can't foster or work directly with the cats anymore.

FIV is not super-contagious. Like HIV, FIV and FeLV require body fluid exchange through a blood-drawing bite or sexual contact, maybe the saliva exchange from long term mutual grooming. It's not something that is spread by casual contact, so as long as you make a reasonable effort to keep them seperated in different rooms, it should not be a problem. Be more worried about fleas (and the worms that they carry), and other parasites and fungi. Most of the infectious diseases that are really contagious are things that are vaccine-preventable, so as long as your guys got their initial vax series, you should be fine.
