I found mouse poo on my kitchen counter last night. It was a bit distressing. I think it must have just come in with this cold snap, because all of my food is either in air-tight containers or up high on wire shelves. I have at my disposal one blind cat and two humane mouse traps. My question is--once I've caught the little bugger(s?), what do I do with it? I can't release it near the house. I live in an enormous, 160 year old house, and even if we started patching up every hole today, by the time we finished the squirrels would have started making more.
I'd prefer not to release it in a residential area, because I assume the little guy(s?!) will probably just make his way into another house where there are no humane traps. There are a few agricultural areas about 15 minutes out, but a)it's cold, and the poor critter(s!?!) might just freeze to death, and b)I'm far too scared of mouse (mice?!!) to want to make a road trip. Am I over thinking this?
Also, I believe it (they??!!!) have taken up residence in the oven--there's an awful lot of scratching going on in there. I think the pilot light is probably providing some warmth. How can I be sure that I'm totally rid of them before cooking again? Thank you....
