Bad food day

Have you ever had a particularly "bad food day," and how did you make up for it? I really had one today. The more time that goes by being vegan, the more I realize how many foods I eat accidentally still have animal products in them. I eat in my college's dining hall so the options are quite limited. For lunch I tried to eat this mushroom rice ( Read more... )

It's hard to be vegan if someone else is preparing the food (unless they happen to be vegan as well). Preparing your own food is the best way to guarantee that you're going to eat what is right for you, and prior to that I can only suggest checking the label of every. single. thing. you buy. It's an easy (and informative!) habit to get into.

And yeah, I have to take medications to live, and they aren't vegan / involved the testing of animals. We all make compromises, while trying to live as compassionately as possible.

Do you have any place that you can cook? Rice and beans are cheap and easy to prepare on your own, and then you could supplement with fresh salads and fruits from your cafeteria.

I don't have access to a kitchen when I'm on campus. Luckily I am only on campus for 5 days of the week, and in the spring it will only be 4 days of the week. After May, I'll be living on my own, so it will be a lot easier. During the summers when I do live on my own, I very much get into the habit of reading every single ingredient. I feel so much freer in what I eat! I cannot wait until I have that experience every day. :)

To clarify - I meant that after May I will be done with college and finally be able to live fully vegan (at least as much as possible) :)

Excellent! Just hang on then, 'til then. The freedom is something that I tend to take for granted, until I travel too far from the metro area. Then I loooooong for my kitchen, write angsty poetry.

I second the prepare your own food suggestion. I know it's hard while living in a dorm, but at least if you keep a stash of granola/nuts, soy yogurt, soymilk, and fruits in your room you won't go dinner-less on those bad days.

Yeah I snuck in a hot pad? this thing that was like an eye from a stove, and used it in the dorm room. I think it may have been against the dorm rules, but nothing was going to come between me and my tea.
