we have been infiltrated by mice...

...and I am not at all interested in harming them, but they have been getting into our food, the cats' food and litter (they are obviously not afraid of my elderly feline friends), and sadly getting into the toilet and dying (my dad never remembers to put the seat down). Dad wants to get them out of the house, but neither of us want to harm them. We are thinking of getting live traps, but we have quite a few, so that might not take care of all of them, and I don't want to separate families.
Any suggestions of humane deterrents? Anything?
