"Hell is other people"

The hardest part about being vegan, for me, is conversing with non-vegan people. In the past while, I've asked 3 people, "Oh, you're vegan?" (because i really think that they are based on the context) and they've said no. Now I'm not talking about meanies, but nice, informed people. I get really awkward and have no idea what to say. My responses come off as judgmental, because, well, I guess I'm a bit disappointed to hear that they're not. I'd like to be nicer and to inspire people and energize them, not make them feel guilty.

What do you say when someone, with a guilty look, proclaims that they used to be vegan or that they're vegetarian?

I do a lot of public outreach work for veg*n groups, and I guess it comes up fairly often. I know it's important to be humble and remember my story and to see people as blocked vegans.... I just find this hard sometimes!

Thanks!
