leather is eco friendly?

simple (brand) shoes has a new "planet walker" line that they claim is:"PlanetWalkers might just be the most comfortable and eco-friendly shoes on the planet.
BUT THEY USE LEATHER!!

i mean.. does this make anyone else say wtf??
since when is leather good for the environment?
is there something i'm not getting here?

leather is much more biodegradable than vinyl. :)

I work with eco products and am always so angered when people think leather is so great as an environmental product.
