So yesterday my friend told me that she'd been so moved by the story of the SHAC7 that she told her five year old daughter about it (both of them are vegan). Her daughter was so proud of what they did (in a five year old way) in speaking out that she wanted to send them some drawings.
So they both sat in their living room together and wrote to them and did crayon drawings. I thought that was pretty special! :)
On a side note, how do you tell children things about what is in food? We had a situation in a cafe where her daughter was served marshmallows with her hot drink (AND I was given honey with my tea, AFTER I had specifically told them everyone at the table was vegan). Her mum took them away, explaining that they weren't vegan, and I explained that they had gelatin in them which was made from animals bodies. Poor little mite looked so conflicted, saying she wanted them so much, but she didn't want to hurt animals. My husband later found a recipe for vegan marshmallows which we're making for her.
I've also had situations where I've been asked by my omni nieces and nephews why I'm vegan, and I've told them that I don't like eating the bodies of animals, because animals are my friends and have feelings and need me to protect them from being hurt. They've asked me specifics, and I've told them, without too much graphic detail. They were kind of shocked to learn that their pizza was covered in dead cow and that their milk was taken away from a really sad, hurt cow.
So how much do you personally tell the children in your life about what is in their food? I'm intrigued!
