I work work at a "home" (more like a centre where people stay from 4 days to 3 weeks at a time) for multihandicapped people, and I'm just home from the night shift.
At work last night my coworker (a lady the age of my mum, 50ish) had brought snacks for the night. She had ice cream and strawberries - I really couldn't turn her down!
It's hard enough to get along with coworkers at my job (people who work with the disabled are an interesting bunch), so I was touched by her effort...
Milky ice cream. But I ate it.
It felt bad - after going soy/rice/wheat milk sucks.
I guess one of the hardest things about being vegan is how to compromise or not compromise with other people.
I think many of you would say that I shouldn't have touched the ice cream - said I was allergic, etc.
What bothers me about my workplace is that people seem to have NO CLUE about diets.
Our users, particulary those with CP, shouldn't have milk at all (slimy and hard to digest), not meat either, since their stomachs are basically paralyzed.
We have a young man with Down's that is being fed milk, eggs and meat - all the things people with Down's syndrome should avoid. This guy should be a vegetarian, but no, too hard.
Our cook buys soy milk - guess what? Only CHOCOLATE soy milk.
Frustrating!
Doesn't help that we don't bring lunch, we take from the work fridge, so my only lunch/dinner choice is bread with mashed banana (it's seriously our only vegan thing except apples!)
I do love my job though. : ) I might make a bigger post about the nutritional aspect of this some other time (if it's not boring), but what I was wondering now was:
- Do any of you guys have any trouble with being vegan at work or around coworkers?
conversations with the general public,
work issues,
opinion-unvegan gifts,
opinion-making exceptions?
