I just graduated from undergrad and I have the whole summer off before I start grad school. I'm looking for a summer job, and a few issues have come up. Would you work at a job that didn't jive with your morals? For instance, would you work at a restaurant that served meat? What do you think about working at a pet store? Or what about for a store ( Read more... )

As long as the job is not *focused* on non-vegan stuff, I would probably do it. Like right now, I do plant research. Most of what I do is probably vegan... growing plants, inoculating them with fungus, stuff like that. Sometimes though, I have to work with bacteria and grow them on non-vegan media. Sometimes I have to use enzymes that were derived from a non-vegan source. But I wouldn't say my job has a non-vegan focus, so it doesn't bother me much. My goal is to just stick with non-sentient model organisms.

I guess what makes me okay with it or not is whether the use of non-vegan products is incidental. Is the place you're working for just not going out of their way to use a vegan product? Or is it actually *trying* to get the non-vegan product? If you're working at a shoe store, it's the difference between having some shoes with leather vs. one that purposefully only sells leather shoes. It's the difference between working at a restaurant that serves a few meat dishes vs. working at a steakhouse.

But of course, if you have the option to go for a purely vegan job, that's the best.
