Hi everyone!
I'm new to the community--I've been vegetarian about 12 years and vegan for 3--and I'm hoping to get some advice on vegan protein powder (like, to add to shakes/drinks). I do some weightlifting and I like to drink a protein shake afterwards. I'm female so I'm not looking to bulk up a ton, but I've found that I do get more and faster results if I drink protein shake right after my workout.
The stuff I've been using is Whole Foods brand Soy Protein Powder (vanilla). It has 24g of protein, and when I mix it with soymilk, my shake has a total of 30g protein (which I think i read is the maximum your body can absorb at a time anyway). I started getting this stuff because it's relatively affordable, has almost double the protein of some of the other powders out there, and is low on sugar (it has no sugar at all actually).
What I'm concerned about is how much soy I'm consuming in a day. If I have a shake in addition to my regular food, I'm eating the shake in addition to soymilk throughout the day, maybe a soy yogurt, and tofu/tempeh. My question is how much soy protein per day is too much? Should I be using rice protein powder or something instead if I'm going to be adding 30g of extra protein to my diet daily? And lastly, do you have any recommendations for brands of vegan non-soy protein powder mix that's affordable, low on sugar, and high on protein?
I don't care that much about taste; like I said, I mix it with soymilk and often blend it all with frozen banana or frozen strawberry.
Thanks so much for any advice!
