Attack on veganism made on LJ

Feb 27, 2008 01:19

In the topmodel community, someone made a thread about how fashion photographer Nigel Barker is now supportive of ending the seal hunt. Newfoundland residents responded in anger and told me I would never understand because I'm vegetarian/vegan, which they got from my user info.http://community

OMFG..THE ECONOMY IS SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE PLANET! WWWAAAAAA!!! D:

That's what I hear.

Yes, it's a grey area because it does involve the economy for Newfoundland but is it really worth the extinction of a species?

Yeah, really.

That's like (got this from my teacher, by the way, please politely inform me correctly if I've been misinformed) China (and maybe other countries. Please inform me this as well) using their local medicines and tonics as an excuse to murder endangered species.

The whole economy of an area over the extinction of an animal species is pretty obvious to me. Considering not only do animals have the ability to experience and and just as much right to live as we do, their survival might be vital to the balance of the area they inhabit.

Other than this, I'm not much for debating and I'm not exactly the most informed person whn it comes to these truths/lies.

Could someone educate me further? Politely?

idk, i'm completely against it but i really do NOT agree with I'd rather see 5,000 dead people than 5,001 dead seals. i'd rather NOTHING died, and i'd assume you know that humans CAN survive WITHOUT the seal clubbing / killing.

I know. Of course, I'd rather nothing died. I just wanted to illustrate that I consider humans and animals to be equal and I certainly wouldn't sacrifice more seals than people, in order to save people. And by "save people" I mean from economic hardship/starving to death as she claims would happen.

but you WOULD sacrifice more people than seals? idk, if you'd rather have 5000 dead people than 5001 dead seals, in my opinion, i'd say you don't see them as equal...

How so?

aleadfeather is saying they'd rather see 5000 lives lost than 5001.

Slavery was driving force in the economy but it was abolished....because it was wrong. People adapted.
Eventually there will be no more fish to cull or seals to kill then what?
*sigh*
I get so frustrated.
Good for you for standing up.

With Twiggy being an anti-fur vegetarian and now Nigel taking up the fight against the seal hunt, I'm starting to feel better about my addiction to the show. :P
