free-range

I apologize if I overlooked this, but I can't find this listed in the memories. About a month or so ago, someone had posted a youtube video about free-range eggs/poultry, and how it's a myth that they're treated well, etc. I'm about to try to explain to someone why free-range isn't much better, and was wondering if anyone had a link to this ( Read more... )

what's wrong with-free range, what's wrong with-eggs

A lot of these sites don't actually cite which farms practice inhumane free range policies. I think someone should actually do a lot more research to actually make a website with a more powerful statement. Statements like, "According to USDA policies..." without actually giving hard evidence makes for a poor argument. Some farms might practice USDA policies to a T, whereas some other farms may go beyond those regulations. Instead of making broad statements like, "OMG all free range eggs are BAD BAD BAD, you need to use mashed banana in your muffins instead" why not go to the effort of finding farms that treat their animals humanely and pointing people in their direction? It's probably a more realistic goal than getting everybody to adopt a vegan diet.

I agree. I couldn't find a list of farms that do or don't follow the USDA policies, so I posted what I could find.

it's probably not possible for everyone to do this but check this out: http://www.seattleurbanfarmco.com/chickens.html

I think it'd be awesome if anyone who had a yard could set up their own chicken coop if they wanted to eat eggs. They could rescue or adopt a couple of chickens from sanctuaries so they wouldn't have to support the chick industry even. Two chickens don't even really peck at each other... at night they like to sit together all fruffled up and coo. At least, that's what my chickens did when I had them as a kid. I had about 7 very happy chickens and I'd give the eggs they laid to extended family so they wouldn't have to buy eggs at the store.... : /

heh, i have a bunch of little featherdusters (bantam chickens) - that are happy, well-fed, and loved. I feed their eggs to the dogs, and back to them, and the omnivores sometimes steal a couple for breakfast.
