funny mom

Today my mom and I went to Whole Foods to stock up on vegan goods for Thursday. As we were leaving she commented about how crowded it was, so I joked with her that we should go to Union Square next to endure another insanely busy store. The following ensued:

Mom: No thanks.
Me: Oh, because you'll be there on Friday?
Mom: No, I'll be at hairless day then.
Me: Do you mean Fur Free Friday?
Mom: Yes, I thought it would be good to start some new traditions this year.
Me: Whoa!

My mom is one of those odd meat eaters who knows a lot about factory farming, loathes fur and feels really guilty for eating any animal products at all or wearing leather, but does for a host of stupid reasons/excuses. Her diet is generally vegan-leaning with a weekly cholesterol fest at Grandma's and a little bit of "evil things" (her words!) throughout the week. I don't think she'll ever go vegan, but you never know. She's not cooking a turkey this year like she usually does, so maybe after eight years of watching me thrive as a vegan and my dad as a veganish freegan she's reconsidering her lifestyle. One can only hope.
