the only soft serve i know of in the chicago area is at soul vegetarian and at veggie bite. i've never seen any at chicago diner or pick me up or any of the other vegan friendly restaurants in the city.
i agree with you, it is overrated. however, it holds a monopoly because its the only place in chicago that has such an extensive menu and so many vegan options. the owners are batshit crazy wierdos. the two entrees that are always good are always REALLY good, though - the reuben and fajitas. once you know how to navigate around their shitty menu its a much tastier experience. for awhile they were doing great, but then their two best chefs left because of crazy owners, and took all of their recipe modifications that had made the food better, with them. i don't get their milkshakes on principal alone - when temptation was selling quarts, you could get one for under 7 bucks. ONE MILKSHAKE THERE IS $6.50!!!!!!!!
ah, and i will also say that most chicago vegans don't realize how shitty diner is because a) they can't cook or b) haven't been to eat at vegan restaurants in cities like NYC, Portland, Seattle, etc., or have never been to the south side for Soul Vegetarian.
second that 100%. i grew up in chicago, but now i've been in NYC for 4 years and most of the vegan restaurants here are consistently better. it's actually really good to hear other people say that they feel chicago diner is overrated. i've never been a fan of the place, but everyone always insists it's just me.
I AM SO JEALOUS ... of the vegan soft-serve you will eat alone!!
actually I took a trip to chicago last year and did a zine on it with lots of restaurant reviews:
