My sister is really into gardening, although she's restricted to pots on the apartment balcony. She's newly vegan (yay!) and is now facing some concerns about her hobby.
Do any of you have suggestions for what kind/brand of potting soil she should buy?
She wants to do organic, but the only organic stuff we could find at Osh (home/gardening store) was made with bat poop, worm casings, and what looked to be... I forget what it was called exactly, but I believe it was made with oyster shells or something? Also, I think another ingredient might have been 'feather meal'. I haven't checked the other home/garden stores yet (Home Depot, Lowes, and Green Thumb) but I was hoping that maybe one of you would have a suggestion for me that I could look for when I do go.
Also, she just discovered aphids on her plants. She doesn't want to use pesticides, and her first idea was ladybugs... but then was thinking about how that's not really vegan either (using animals/how many die in transport/etc.) Any ideas? She might be willing to kill the aphids if it comes down to it, but I don't know. She's literally only been vegan a few weeks and she's still sorting out her feelings about things... a deterrent would be ideal, though.
