There is a lot of contention over vegan rats on the rat groups I'm part of. Rats are omnivores, like humans, and do really well on vegan diets, like humans. My girls eat Natural Balance Vegan kibble (no wheat, corn, soy...so, none of the big GMO troubles. They use canola, but the rep. told me it's non-GMO), a homemade organic version of Suebee's grain mix (rat folks will know what this is) heavy on the ancient grains, plus lots of fresh, organic fruits, veggies, cooked legumes, and grains. They are doing really well!
I just had the three youngest spayed and the doctor went on about how fit they are and how their condition was so good. Most rats he sees are very overweight... mine were an exception. I say it's due to the good food they get!
The finches are on the world's most expensive organic pelleted food. No, really, it's ungodly! It's Harrison's (for you bird folks looking for a good, organic pellet) and costs 40 bucks for 5 lbs. Good lord! They like it, though, and I like that it's free of GMOs and animal products. :)
My cats are not vegan. I've done a lot of reading and I don't feel it's in their best interest. Their food is Natural Balance Venison and Green Pea. It's grain-free, not animal tested, and the deer are from New Zealand and are raised in non-confined states. I refuse to buy food with eggs in it, as I think eggs are the animal product that is the cruelest to "produce". They also don't get dairy as it is poorly digested and unnecessary. I'd really rather not get into it any further than that. After my current rescue cats pass, I will probably not adopt any more. I have real ethical problems with feeding animals meat but feel cats honestly need it, like ferrets do. I'll just stick to rats! <3
