Smithfield Pork to phase out gestation crates

Washington, D.C. - Smithfield Foods Inc., the nation’s largest hog producer, announced today that it will phase out the use of crates to house sows, a move immediately hailed by animal-welfare activists.

a wonderful step.
i worry, though, that people will now be more reinforced in the idea that factory-farmed animals aren't mistreated and that meat-consumption is ok

That's always a concern (and a valid one).

We'll just have to continue educating consumers on the ethical, health and environmental concerns surrounding the meat industry.
