Health benefits of veganism!!!

I wanted to share this great news with all of you. It's relevant to veganism and what I feel are its health benefits.

My husband is a Type 2 diabetic. What's unusual about his case is that unlike most Type 2's, he does not have a weight problem (so losing weight, which is helpful for most Type 2's, is not an option) and he was diagnosed very young (32; he's now 38). His doc treats him more like a Type 1 for these reasons. He currently takes two shots of insulin a day.

We went vegan two months ago this week. Today he went in for his check-up, and his blood sugar has gone from an average 3-month reading of 280 (high) to 150!!! (normal, non-diabetic average is 100). He hasn't been at 150 since he was diagnosed six years ago.

His cholesterol has also been historically high, and it does run in his father’s side of the family (his dad is stick-thin but cholesterol is in the 500’s without medication).

My husband's cholesterol is down from 354 to 259. He does not take and has never taken cholesterol medicine.

His doctor was just floored. He said these kinds of reductions are unheard of without medication. Mickey (hub) told him we’d switched to a vegan diet just two months ago, and doc said to keep on doing whatever it is we’re doing, because it’s obviously working. He even told him that there's a possibility he can come off the insulin shots and go back to pills if it continues to look this good.

Needless to say, I’m incredibly excited. Trying not to get too giddy just yet, as diabetes is a serious disease, but after being faced with the knowledge that my husband might die young from this disease, this is the first time I've had real hope that we might be able to significantly slow down the effects.

I knew the cholesterol would be affected since only animal products contain cholesterol, but I’m truly shocked at the effect on his blood sugar.

I just wanted to share my happiness with you guys.
