I have never run more than 10k in my life, so I've never run so long that I needed to eat or drink while running. So I've got two questions. My goal is in a few weeks to run at least 10 and hopefully 13 miles. Do I even need to eat or drink during a run of that length? And my second question is, what do you eat on a long run? Are cliff bars too heavy? (Are they even vegan? The last time I ate one I was only a vegetarian.) Bananas maybe? Or maybe just get a bloodsugar boost from orange juice?
Another issue entirely: What should a vegan eat or do to recover from a loss of blood? I did a double donation of red cells a little over a week ago. Don't get me wrong, I feel fine and completely normal, all the time -- except when running. I almost fainted the first time, and still, I have to work twice as hard for 8-minute miles as I used to work for 7-minute miles. Am I even right to be blaming the blood loss? And what should I do to speed recovery?
