I've always wondered this...

I sometimes see people spell out vegan with an asterisk, such as: veg*n or veg*an. Can someone explain the purpose to this or reason?

veg*n means vegan and vegetarian

the * represents anything that goes between, such as the "a" for "vegan" and the "etaria" for "vegetarian"
