I want to thank everyone who responded to
this post about my puppy's difficulty eating solid foods. She ended up eating a combination of Esbilac Milk Replacer Formula for Puppies and Purina Puppy Chow crushed in a blender. After a few days, she switched over to the regular kibble and can now easily chew it.
(My boyfriend was eating both vegetarian and non-vegetarian sushi; she chose the vegan option.)
More Pictures of Bella I'm still undecided about her long-term diet. I'll probably give her Natural Balance's puppy formula and switch her over to their vegan formula for adult dogs when she's a year old. At the moment she seems to be more of an omnivore than most humans I know... She enjoyed the homemade dog food my boyfriend made her (blended organic free range beef, nutritional yeast, corn, puppy chow, and milk replacer) but is also obsessed with my vegan meatballs.
Bella also went to her first appointment with the veterinarian on Wednesday, The veterinarian was extremely nice until I mentioned my desire to eventually place her on a vegetarian diet.
She informed me that she "understood" and had been a vegetarian for ten years but that I had to think of Bella in terms of her ancestry and realize that her body was not made to digest vegetable proteins. I was then told to place Bella on a "premium" dog food, such as Eukanuba or Science Diet. Eukanuba is made by
Iams and I've heard nothing but bad things from pet owners whose dogs and cats have used Science Diet. She also gave me a "puppy packet" that contained a free sample of Iams.
Bella is scheduled to return for more shots in a couple of weeks. Do I mention
the cruelty of Iams to the veterinarian or her staff or do I just let it go? I could find Bella a new veterinarian but this one is within walking distance of my house (I'm a horrible driver...) and the other vets in the area are likely to be the same. Is it likely that she is just ignorant of Iams cruel treatment of animals? It seems unthinkable to me that anyone who cares about animals could so actively promote such a cruel corporation.
