I bought this stuff called Tofu Shirataki from Trader Joes. It looks like noodles, but it is tofu noodles or something. The problem is...the bag says "Shirataki is composed of thin gelatinous strings made from yam flour (polysacccharide-glucomannan) from the Konnyaku root and....blah blah"
The word gelatinous concerns me. But the ingrediets read:
filtered water
tofu (soybeans, calcium sulfate, glucono delta lactone)
yam flour
calcium hydroxide
So...is this vegan or not??? I am soo confused.
x-posted, sorry!
EDIT: They are NOT vegan. But only because of the calcium hyroxide which apparently comes from scallops. Hmm the most unsuspecting of ingredients. I e-mailed them less than 10 minutes ago and just got a call. So at least they were helpful and honest.
is this vegan?
