A nice story for everyone:

I know we've all had some awful restaurant experiences ("but fish is vegetarian!"), but today I had a wonderful one. It was a welcome-home party for the baby my aunt adopted from Guatamala, held at an Italian restaurant in upstate NY. It was catered. The "standard" dishes were: salad, choice of penne alla vodka with prosciutto or ziti with prosciutto [ham]; choice of veal/chicken/shrimp parmagiana or filet of sole. Not very vegan. I explained the situation to one of the waiters and he promised me the salad was vegan (it was!) and for the pasta, they'd make me penne with garlic and oil - and I didn't have to ask twice, I got it. The main dish came with a side of vegetables - and I got a huge plateful of the most delicious vegetables ever. To top it all off, accompanying the birthday cake were huge platters of fresh fruit.

All in all, a wonderful day. I made sure to personally thank the waiter afterwards. :)
