counter on 1st ave. at 6th street is a little expensive but it's trendy and pretty and the food is delicious. they also have good drinks.
red bamboo on w. 4th street between macdougal and 6th ave. has great food and while it's sort of trendy looking too, it's smaller and more casual than counter.
the tofu cheesecake at kate's joint (avenue b at 4th street) is remarkable. it's better than real cheesecake. their other food is pretty good too.

heirloom for a fancy/pricy dinner (but it's my fave place for vegan food in nyc) caravan of dreams is pretty good, especially for salads and brunch foodswings, of course!
