The website petakillsanimals.com is owned and operated by a group called the Center for Consumer Freedom which is a PR groups funded by tobacco companies, fastfood giants, the animal slaughter industry, etc. Basically, their goal is to completely discredit any animal rights groups so that the general public maintains the status quo. This group gets scads of money from companies that profit from killing / torturing animals and deceiving the public about their choices as consumers. They pretend to be grassroots, but they're not.

According to Peta, they do not run a shelter. They take in animals that would elsewhere have no chance whatsoever, are so tortured they wouldn't live, have fatal diseases, etc. Those that can be saved, are. Those that are suffering are given a peaceful, dignified end.

In other words, they do the dirty work.

I have a friend who works for Peta, and this is basically what he tells me.

In reality though, can we really expect all animals to be adopted into loving homes? No kill shelters are nice and all, but sometimes animals are stuck there for years. Euthanasia seems like a necessary evil to me.

Peta does indeed support killing in some cases. Many people probably have similar views and believe that euthanasia is moral, since the goal is to remove suffering for which there is no cure.

In a job interview I had with them, I found out that in order to work for PETA, you have to agree to promote the idea of euthasia. It's too bad, because I think a lot of really good, really intelligent, and really compassionate people don't agree, and believe that an individual should have the right to live if he/she/it chooses to do so.

But, PETA still does lots of other great things, and promotes many other compassionate ideas that help relieve suffering for many individuals. So I give them a lot of slack.

But the idea of euthanasia is not that it should be done indiscriminately, but that it should be an option for those whose suffering cannot be relieved. The problem comes in when we argue about our responsibilities as the decision-makers for non-human animals who cannot discuss their options and preferences with us. We must either choose palliative care or euthanasia based on our preferences - the animal has no real say in the matter. That PETA's decision is to euthanise those animals they cannot save or guarantee a decent quality of life for, and cannot find homes which will accept a dying animal, doesn't seem unreasonable to me.
