I am greatly anticipating seeing
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory so I was checking out some of the merchandise that has spawned from the film. I have to say that the scariest thing I found are the Wonka Cakes... The only place I could find a list of ingredients was in
this journal (no trolling, for the love of pie...) I couldn't even find the list on the
main website.
I never expected them to be vegan, but they're not even vegetarian. They contain hydrogenated animal shortening, beef fat, pork gelatin, and carmine. Are the original Hostess cupcakes made out of the same horrific ingredients? I wonder if you told kids that Wonka Cakes contain cow fat, pig tendons and sinew, and crushed up bugs if they'd still eat them... Really, I'm not surprised that people eat such things, because hardly anyone reads ingredient labels, but if people still ate them even after knowing the ingredients... that's just disturbing.
I read somewhere that Johnny Depp had no control over his visage being placed on the cake box (which is the only good thing about the cakes)... But that led me to wonder how a person would keep a creation of theirs or their likeness from being brandished on something that would go against their morals. I'd hate to have anything that I created or had a part in be made into Happy Meal toys or slapped on disgusting cakes...
