I know this probably isn't the correct place to comment on this, but I just thought I'd do it anyway. You can figure out what to do with it.
Recently in cheapvegan, someone asked about cheap vegan cat food. They got slammed, and when I defended with a testimonial about my healthy vegan cats (or perhaps 'cats who eat vegan cat food') who get regular check-ups at the vet and everything, I was told that I am an animal abuser. After getting so many abusive responses, I cracked. I was really hurt that so many vegans weren't open to even discussing the possibilities and automatically jumped to conclussions and name-calling. They obviously did not do the research themselves and mostly just made the same sorts of arguments people make against vegan diets in other people. I tried to keep my cool, but lost it a little at the end. Anyway, I dropped the community from my friend's list alltogether because I don't want to allow myself to get that worked up again, but just wanted to say something, cause it seems like vegans shouldn't attack each other so harshly, especially when discussing the furthering of vegan-dom. I'm actually still upset about it, but I'm going to let it go. I just wanted to say something. I know mods have no way of instilling common decency in other people, but I figured if anyone can brainstorm a good solution, it'd be you guys.
That's all. Good luck, and I'm so proud that there are so many good vegan communities!
Wow, I'm not in that community but I just went to check it out - 189 comments!! I feel for you! People are people, vegan or not. I just try to avoid these types of heated conversations online. Nobody listens to each other - everyone is just yelling over each other. It's silly and rarely results in anything productive. From the community info, it appears that political debate is not welcome in that community. Perhaps the mod was away at the time?
*wink* did you wonder why i decided to hijack this community the day after that debacle?
yes, stargazerlily is a very busy person, and i offered to be a secondary mod for when stuff like that happens.
please don't leave. now with this collaboration, hopefully every community will have a secondary mod (or at least the larger communities) i'll be inviting stargazerlily to join here, definately.
you were a trouper though. you stuck to your beliefs and never backed down. (and you wonder why the vegancooking mods keep a close eye out for politics. i kept that one vegan cat treat entry in to test the members, and it seems as if they are respecting our wishes to keep the politics out. i was duly impressed.)
(i know you said it was rhetorical, but i'm answering it anyway)
there's nothing wrong with discussing politics in veganpeople or vegan_talk, but not in vegancooking or cheapvegan. we want to keep the peace and talk about cooking. it's all about the food.
Mosat of those assholes were from anti-vegan. A good lot of them weren't even vegan. Especially the one who said they'd break my "weakened vegan body" in half, but strangely, when I gave my address and invited hir to prove hirself, zie was "done. with. {me}."
*snarf*
Anyway, I know it's tough, but try not to let those morons get to you. Rest in the knowledge that they don't have any.
