I used to have some really weird ideas as a kid, which now strike me as hilarious. In 3rd grade, we had this art teacher who had a short asymmetrical haircut, dark sunglasses, and a long skirt. One project she made us do was a dinky little weaving with yarn. I remember thinking, "I better hold on to this shitty little tapestry I'm weaving, because ( Read more... )

MR. BRIGHTSIDE. Shit almighty, I even like that song.
"Excuse Me Mister" by No Doubt might count as well.

Also, if the band counts, there was that band "mister mister". And probably some songs on the Mr. Deed's soundtrack have his name in the title.

There seem to be a lot more songs about misters than about choking. Remember when I tried to get a list of those together? I got like 8 suggestions and most of them were vague like "umm, angry punk band x sometimes talks about it".

Yeah, I do remember that.

Lola was making a mix a few months ago of songs about robotic and/or inanimate lovers. I thought that was a pretty good idea. I suggested In Every Dream Home a Heartache by Roxy Music (about sex dolls), I recently remembered Speedy Marie by Frank Black (one of my favorite songs ever since 6th grade), and today in the car we heard Lump by POTUSA, which she had never heard-- we think that counts. Right?

I don't think it's clear whether Lump is physically inert or emotionally inert. My interpretation is that lump is a very apathetic, unexcitable girl - similiar to the charachter in Boll Weevil.

There's a Beck song on Midnite Vultures - I forget which - which has Beck's version of robots having sex.

Gary Numan's down in the park is about evil robots in the future and they have "rape rooms" as well as gladatioral contests. Good song - better Foo Fighters cover, actually.

They do a good cover. It's on Songs in the Key of X, so I have to like it. I could never really make out the lyrics before.

It's "rape machines," though, not "rape rooms"-- you're thinking of Saddam. He's very different from Gary Numan, although they both like machines and have dim futures.

Seth points out (rightly so) that Frank Zappa has several songs about sex with robots / inanimate objects. The song I know is Ms Pinky from Zoot Allures, which is about a blow up doll; Seth says that one subplot of Joe's Garage is about robot sex. I think there are other songs out there about blow up dolls, but I can't think of any of the top of my head.

I was asking Seth if Steely Dan had songs about steely dans, but while Seth could think of several songs of theirs about deviant sexual practices, he could come up with none about dildoes specifically. Further, neither of us could remember a Nick Cave song with direct reference to necrophilia, but there has to be at least one. I'm not too familiar with Nocturama but I think there might be something there... and murder ballads skirts it a few times, like on "where the wild roses grow" after she's dead by the riverbed. It doesn't say that he had sex with her, but it would make sense.
