i used to work at a health food store that did some bakery and deli stuff. one of the recipes they developed was this brownie recipe, which was so good we were able to sell biggish ones at $2 a pop (canadian). i myself spent way too much money on the things before i finally got at the recipe (i eventually took over the baking at the store, before ( Read more... )

these look great. one part i didn't understand...does it take both soymilk and soymilk powder, or just one or the other?

one or the other. the idea is to use soymilk, but it's cheaper to substitute in powdered soymilk than use packaged stuff (i use a soymilk maker, so it's moot for me)... so if you use soymilk, then you're all set, and otherwise you use water in the wet ingredients and add soymilk powder to the dry.

Hmmm - these sound good! Can you tell me, what is turbinado sugar?

turbinado's just a kind of non-refined (or at least less-refined, because it's still fairly light) sugar. you know it when you see it by its light maple color and its coarse grains. but any kind of sugar should work for this recipe - turbinado is just what we used at the HFS because it was the best balance between cheap and healthy.

i just made these, and they are so very good! i think i am going to add the chocolate chips to the batter next time also, because i like my brownies to be more fudgy. the prunes scared me, but i was really surprised that even before i added the cocoa, when mixed with the tofu they already tasted like chocolate!
thanks! this is definatly in my recipe notebook now!
